Follow-Up: Residential Cruise Ship Odyssey Sails Out of Cambodia's Sihanoukville Port With Crew Only and No Passengers

The U.S. residential cruise ship Odyssey left Cambodia's Sihanoukville Autonomous Port in the early hours of November 4 with only crew and technical personnel aboard and no passengers, according to Cambodian port officials and local media. Its destination and next steps were not publicly disclosed. The ship had been docked at Sihanoukville since October 23.
Operated by Florida-based Villa Vie Residences, the Odyssey had been marketed as a roughly three-and-a-half-year world voyage, with cabins sold as long-term residences and capacity for about 650 passengers. The ship had called at Sihanoukville intending to refuel and continue, but on October 28 the operator suspended the voyage, citing soaring fuel costs, and its 203 passengers were told to disembark.
The company has said that, amid tensions in the Middle East, monthly fuel costs per cabin in Asian waters had risen from about $1,800 to an estimated $6,000 to $8,000, making the model financially unsustainable. Reports say the company has also been exploring restructuring, including possible Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States.
Former residents scattered after disembarking. Nearly 100 were still in Sihanoukville in early November, reports said, while others dispersed to Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and onward international destinations to rearrange flights, accommodation, refunds and insurance. Reports differed on how many crew actually sailed; company documents had listed about 156 crew, while local coverage put the number who departed lower.
The crew-only departure is being read in the travel industry mainly as a repositioning move rather than a signal of an imminent relaunch. The operator has released no detailed schedule for any return to service.
