The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Missouri announced that Jose Guadalupe Moreno-Malagon, 43, of Reeds Spring, in Stone County, Missouri, has pleaded guilty in federal court. He is a Mexican national who was residing illegally in the United States.

Moreno-Malagon pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Megan Blair Benton to one count of illegal possession of firearms by an illegal immigrant and one count of unlawful entry into the United States.

According to prosecutors, on April 20, 2026, Moreno-Malagon contacted the Stone County Sheriff's Office to report that he was an illegal alien and wished to turn himself in to authorities. Deputies responded to his residence and observed several firearms but were unable to verify his immigration status. On April 21, 2026, deputies returned to the residence and arrested Moreno-Malagon for being in the United States unlawfully and for illegally possessing firearms. Deputies seized two pistols and a semi-automatic rifle from his residence.

His sentencing is set for April 7, 2027. Under federal law, he faces up to 15 years in federal prison without parole for the firearms count and up to six months for unlawful entry. Prosecutors noted that the maximum statutory sentences are prescribed by Congress and that the actual sentence will be determined by the court based on the advisory sentencing guidelines and other factors after a presentence investigation. The case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations and the Stone County Sheriff's Office and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Tony Brown. (Source: U.S. Department of Justice)
