Follow-Up: Martha Stewart Explains Halloween Costume, Says Craig Melvin's Chocolate Spill Ruined Her Planned Sweater

Wednesday, November 4, 2026 · Entertainment · GSM News

Martha Stewart, 85, offered a new explanation on stage in Orlando, Florida, on November 3 for the Halloween costume that drew days of criticism, saying it began when Today co-host Craig Melvin spilled chocolate on the sweater she had planned to wear on Halloween night, according to USA Today and Entertainment Weekly. Footage of the remarks, obtained by TMZ, surfaced on November 4 and was picked up by multiple outlets. GSM previously reported the October 31 costume backlash and Stewart's November 1 statement, followed the same day by a formal apology.

Stewart said that during her October 30 appearance on Today, Melvin, dressed as Snoop Dogg, accidentally spilled chocolate ganache on her sweater while helping her decorate a cheesecake. Speaking at the CrossCountry Mortgage Sales Rally in Orlando, she recalled: "He spilled chocolate all over my sweater, which I was going to wear on Halloween night." On the show itself, the two had focused more on her pants; Melvin apologized on air for having "destroyed your $3,000 pants," and Stewart joked, "Real Snoop would never do that."

By her account, when she picked up the sweater on Halloween night she found it "so dirty" and had only 10 minutes to get dressed for a Halloween party, so "the easiest costume was to get dressed up as a bum." She said she looked at herself and thought, "You really look hungry and homeless," so she wrote a sign that said "I'm hungry" — adding, with a laugh, "and boy, did that go off."

The background: in an Instagram photo posted on Halloween night, October 31, Stewart wore ripped jeans, a cream cardigan and a black knit cap, her face smeared with dirt, holding a sign that read "I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!!" Critics accused her of making light of homelessness. After deleting the post, she said on November 1 that the costume was intended to bring awareness to homelessness, then, after further criticism, apologized the same day, writing that wearing the costume "was insensitive and not funny" and "I am very sorry."

The episode has continued to play out on social media, with Jimmy Kimmel addressing the costume in his Monday monologue. Stewart resumed posting on Instagram on November 3, sharing her Library Lion honor at the New York Public Library. Neither Melvin nor the Today show has publicly responded to her new explanation in the reports cited here.
