Caltrans: 150-Year-Old Culvert Under SR-49 in Sonora to Be Replaced, Lane Shifts Start Nov. 6

Thursday, November 5, 2026 · California · GSM News

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced on November 4 that it will begin an emergency project to replace a roughly 150-year-old, partially collapsed culvert beneath State Route 49 (Stockton Street) in Sonora, Tuolumne County, California. Crews will replace the culvert on the south side of the highway and upgrade drainage inlets along the corridor, with traffic shifted to the north side through downtown.

Caltrans said the project is being expedited under Governor Gavin Newsom's El Niño emergency proclamation. The $1.2 million contract was awarded to Wylatti Resource Management Inc. of Covelo. The agency said the aging culvert continues to deteriorate and could undermine the roadway during winter storms if left unaddressed.

Beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, November 6, traffic will shift to the north side of the highway between Green Street and Downtown Plaza, remaining in place at all hours. Survey work on November 5 and 6 will require one-way traffic control from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The south sidewalk will be closed during construction, and the nearby bus stop has been relocated next to the Bank of America at Stockton and Washington streets. Caltrans expects the project to be completed in early December and urges drivers to slow down and allow extra travel time through the work zone.
