Iowa LIHEAP Heating Help Opens to All Households November 1: Applications Run to April 30, 2027, After an October Head Start for Seniors and Disabled Households

Thursday, November 5, 2026 · Promotion · GSM News

Applications for Iowa's Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) for the 2026-27 season are now fully open: households with a member aged 60 or older, or a member with a disability, could apply from October 1, 2026, and all other households from November 1, with the window running through April 30, 2027.

LIHEAP is the federally funded, state-run heating assistance program that helps income-eligible households pay winter heating costs. Households that have received a disconnect notice, whose gas is shut off, or whose deliverable fuel is at 30 percent or less, or whose furnace produces no heat, are asked to contact their local administering agency directly about urgent options.

In east-central Iowa, applications are handled by HACAP, a community action agency covering Linn, Jackson, Iowa, Johnson, Jones, Delaware, Benton, Washington and Dubuque counties, with offices in Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Dubuque and other towns. Required documents are Social Security cards for all household members, the most recent heating bill, the most recent electric bill, and proof of income for all household members. Questions can be texted to 1-272-422-2746 or emailed to [email protected].

HACAP notes that some applications (its A&E applications) cannot be completed online and must be mailed to the local office; office addresses and hours are listed on HACAP's LIHEAP page. Residents elsewhere in Iowa can find their local agency through the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services' LIHEAP page.
