California Proposes First Update to Water Well Standards Since 1991: Public Comment Open Through January 7, 2027

San Diego County, California — The County of San Diego Department of Environmental Health and Quality (DEHQ) announced that the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) is revising its Bulletin 74 water well standards, the first update since 1991. The draft standards are open for public comment from November 5 through January 7, 2027.
DEHQ posted the comment information and participation details on its land and water quality page. DWR will also hold two virtual meetings, on December 9 from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and December 11 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., to hear public input. The well standards set technical requirements for the siting, construction, sealing and destruction of water wells, bearing on groundwater protection and drinking water safety.
DEHQ also announced that the county's beach water quality website, sdbeachinfo.com, has been redesigned and relaunched, where residents can check water quality at beaches countywide and sign up for beach water quality email and text alerts.
