CAIR: At Least 97 Muslim Candidates Won in the Midterm Elections, a Record in Its Tracking

Thursday, November 5, 2026 · Society · GSM News

WASHINGTON — The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and CAIR Action released preliminary tracking results on November 5 for the November 3 midterm elections, showing at least 97 confirmed electoral victories by American Muslim candidates at the federal, state and local levels across 21 states, including 38 state legislative wins.

CAIR said the preliminary total sets a new midterm election record in its tracking, surpassing the 82 Muslim electoral victories it reported in 2022 by 15, an increase of about 18 percent. The organisations tracked 168 Muslim candidates who advanced past their primaries: 97 have won, 50 have lost, 15 are leading in races not yet called and six are in contests too close to call. CAIR projects that more than 100 American Muslims will have won or been reelected once all votes are counted.

The confirmed winners include Abdul El-Sayed, who won a U.S. Senate race in Michigan and whom CAIR describes as the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate.

CAIR cautioned that the figures are preliminary and subject to official certification, and that totals may rise as the remaining races are decided. It said it would issue a final count report the following week and release an updated directory of elected Muslim officials in January.
