Trump Says He Met Putin Envoy Dmitriev at the White House: Ukraine Deal Will Be a 'Big Agreement' Involving More Than Ukraine

Washington — President Donald Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on November 5 that he had met that day with Kirill Dmitriev, Russian President Vladimir Putin's special envoy, and said an agreement to end the Russia-Ukraine war was "very close," with a final deal reaching well beyond Ukraine itself.
Trump declined to say what he and Dmitriev had discussed. "It's going to be an agreement. It's going to be a big agreement, and it's going to involve more than Ukraine... I could even say it might involve all of Europe. It's going to be a big, beautiful agreement, and everyone's going to be thrilled," he said. He called the war "a bloodbath" that "has to end," adding, "I think we're going to get it ended pretty soon, very soon, maybe."
Asked whether he had met the Ukrainian representatives who were also at the White House, Trump said he had not. Delegations from both countries were at the White House on Thursday for an event hosted by First Lady Melania Trump marking the localized ceasefire in the Ukrainian town of Oleshky that she helped broker; the agreements were signed on October 23.
Dmitriev, who also heads the Russian Direct Investment Fund, has been one of Moscow's main figures in the U.S.-brokered talks. Speaking earlier at the first lady's event, he thanked her for her "distinguished humanitarian role" in securing the six-day truce and said Putin had personally given instructions for the operation and sent his thanks. Mrs. Trump handed the two delegations personal letters she had written to Putin and to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for delivery.
Trump has voiced optimism about a deal repeatedly in recent days. Earlier this week he told the Financial Times he believed both sides were at the point of saying "let's make a deal," though Ukrainian negotiators did not share that assessment. U.S., Russian and Ukrainian delegations are scheduled to meet in Abu Dhabi on November 10 and 11, with the American side led by special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
