Teen Charged in Killing of Columbus 18-Year-Old Aaliyah Chan Remains at Large

Columbus police announced on Nov. 5 that a 16-year-old boy has been charged with multiple felonies in connection with a robbery shooting that killed 18-year-old Aaliyah Chan and wounded two other people. The suspect, Jesiel Armstrong, 16, faces juvenile charges of murder, aggravated robbery and felonious assault. Police said the shooting happened at about 7:45 p.m. on Oct. 30 at an apartment complex on the city's Southwest Side. Officers who responded found multiple people shot; Chan was pronounced dead at the scene, and two other victims were taken to hospitals.
Her father, Paul Chan, said on Nov. 5, after police identified the suspect, that the family is gradually getting closer to the truth and seeking closure, but that a single act destroyed multiple families and he is heartbroken. Aaliyah Chan was a Briggs High School cheerleader who graduated this spring and had planned to attend a cosmetology school in Ohio. Police said she was at the apartment while her boyfriend was getting a haircut and was not the intended target.
Armstrong remains at large and police are searching for him. Anyone with information can call the Columbus police homicide unit at 614-645-4730 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-8477. The case is the latest fatal shooting involving teenagers in Columbus and has renewed community concern over youth violence and gun safety.
