Des Moines Post Office Shooting: Postal Worker Charged With Attempted Murder After 3 Colleagues Wounded

Thursday, November 5, 2026 · Justice · GSM News

A shooting at the main downtown post office in Des Moines, Iowa, on the morning of Nov. 5 left three postal employees wounded, and a 39-year-old female postal worker was arrested and charged with attempted murder. Police spokesman Paul Parizek said officers were called at about 9:10 a.m. to the post office at 1165 Second Avenue, where the gunfire came from a second-floor area closed to the public; initial reports put the number of shots fired at 10 to 12.

The suspect, Jennifer Pleger of West Des Moines, left the building before police arrived at 9:13 a.m. and was arrested at 9:21 a.m. on a nearby bike trail, where a 9mm handgun was recovered. Pleger faces two counts of attempted murder, two counts of willful injury causing serious injury and one count of intimidation with a dangerous weapon, all felonies, and is being held in the Polk County Jail.

The three victims — women aged 45 and 53 and a man aged 55, all postal employees — suffered injuries that were not life-threatening; the two women drove themselves to Mercy Medical Center across the street. Police said the suspect has not stated a motive. The FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service are assisting the investigation. The post office was closed for the day, and part of Second Avenue was shut until about 10:45 a.m.
