AAPI Members of Congress to Reach at Least 22, a Record, as Richard Pan Wins California's 6th District

The Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) announced in Washington on Nov. 4 that, following the Nov. 3 midterm elections, at least 22 Asian American and Pacific Islander members will serve in the next Congress, the largest number in U.S. history. CAPAC Chair Rep. Grace Meng said the election was a repudiation of the Trump administration's policies and a historic step forward for AAPI representation.
The four newly elected AAPI House members each set a first in their district: Dr. Richard Pan became the first Chinese American elected to represent California's 6th Congressional District; Dan Koh became the first Korean and Lebanese American elected to represent Massachusetts' 6th District; Pia Dandiya became the first Indian American woman elected to represent Florida's 22nd District; and Alicia Garrido Limtiaco became the first CHamoru woman elected to represent Guam.
CAPAC said the total could rise to 23 if an AAPI candidate wins one additional close race yet to be called.
