Arizona 19-Year-Old Matta Wins Maricopa County Superior Court Clerk Race as Opponent Concedes

Thursday, November 5, 2026 · States · GSM News

A 19-year-old Democrat, Sebastian Matta, has won the race for Maricopa County Clerk of the Superior Court in Arizona, becoming one of the youngest people ever elected to countywide office in the state. Matta turned 19 in July, the day he won the Democratic primary, and then set his sights on a seat Republicans had held for decades.

In unofficial results reported Nov. 5, Matta led his Republican opponent, former state lawmaker Jeff Dial, by a sizable margin. Dial called Matta on Nov. 4 to concede the race. The clerk's office has seen repeated turnover: Joseph Malka, appointed by Gov. Katie Hobbs, stepped down less than a year later, and Chief Deputy Nancy Rodriguez has served as acting clerk since March 30 and will remain until the new clerk takes office.

Matta told The Arizona Republic that he is not just an ordinary 19-year-old. The Clerk of the Superior Court manages court case files, fees and administrative operations for the Maricopa County judicial system. The results are unofficial until certified by county election officials.
