North Dakota Democrats Make Small Gains in Legislature, Flipping Fargo and Grand Forks Seats

North Dakota Democrats made small gains in this week's legislative elections, flipping seats in Fargo and Grand Forks, though Republicans kept their large majorities in both chambers. Seventy-five of the legislature's 141 seats were on the ballot, and both incumbents who lost were Republicans.
In Fargo's District 41, Democrats Chris Tiongson and Stacy Heidenreich won the two open House seats over Jennifer Benson and Rich Slagle, with Heidenreich prevailing by just 33 votes. In District 11, Anastassiya Andrianova won the seat held by retiring Representative Gretchen Dobervich.
Bismarck Representative Bob Martinson, first elected 50 years ago and the chamber's longest-serving member, won re-election to what he says will be his final term. New lawmakers take office on December 1, ahead of the organizational session in early December. Democrats last held a majority in the legislature in the 1980s and 1990s.
