Nebraska Voters Approve Initiative 442 with About 68 Percent, Writing Sex-Based School Teams into the Constitution

Thursday, November 5, 2026 · States · GSM News

Nebraska voters approved Initiative 442 in the November 3 election, writing a requirement that school sports teams be designated by biological sex into the state constitution. With most precincts reporting, the measure passed with about 68 percent of the vote (68.05 percent in the Associated Press count); Decision Desk HQ called the result at 3:25 a.m. ET on November 4.

The citizen-initiated amendment, backed by a girls' fairness campaign that gathered roughly 211,000 signatures, requires public schools, colleges and private schools competing against them to designate teams as male, female or coed.

The measure largely makes permanent Nebraska's 2025 Stand With Women Act, which already requires sex-based team designations in public schools. Results remain unofficial pending certification by the Nebraska Secretary of State. (Source: Associated Press)
