NJEA Convention Closes Schools in 518 New Jersey Districts on Nov. 5-6
The New Jersey Education Association's 2026 convention opened on November 5 at the Atlantic City Convention Center, and the state's public schools closed for two days for the annual professional-development gathering.
A review of the calendars of all 519 public school districts found that 518 districts are closed on both November 5 and 6, with students returning on Monday, November 9. The only exception is Perth Amboy, which lists the two days as a conditional fall break that can be reclaimed if emergency weather make-up days are needed.
November 5 is neither a federal holiday nor a New Jersey state holiday; the closures follow the long-standing convention tradition. (Source: New Jersey Education Association)
