Pennington County Sheriff's Office Adds Two New Narcotics K-9 Teams

The Pennington County Sheriff's Office in South Dakota announced on November 5 that it has added two narcotics K-9 teams; both dogs and their handlers have completed state certification and are on duty. Funding came from the South Dakota Attorney General's Drug Control Fund. The two dogs are Tiger, a one-year-old German shorthaired pointer handled by Deputy Phillip Rivera, and Ranger, a three-year-old yellow Labrador retriever handled by Deputy Travis Leeson. The sheriff's office said the teams have already assisted in solving several cases since taking up duty. Sheriff Brian Mueller called the dogs a "force multiplier" in fighting crime and drugs and in helping locate missing persons. Narcotics dogs can help deputies search vehicles, buildings and open ground for drugs, and can also take part in missing-person searches. The office said the two teams will continue to support patrol and special operations across the county, assisting with drug enforcement and community safety.
