Utah Senate Democratic Caucus Expels Senator Riebe and Demands Her Resignation

Thursday, November 5, 2026 · US · GSM News

The Utah Senate Democratic Caucus voted to expel Senator Kathie Riebe from the caucus and demanded that she resign her Senate seat. Before the November 3 vote, the caucus released the findings of an independent investigation. The inquiry concerned a formal complaint of workplace discrimination and harassment and concluded that Riebe had engaged in a pattern of behavior "potentially motivated by race, ethnicity or national origin"; investigators also found remarks about employment decisions based on protected characteristics such as sexual orientation. Caucus leaders Luz Escamilla, Karen Kwan, Jen Plumb, Stephanie Pitcher and Nate Blouin signed a statement saying that, given the seriousness of the findings and the breach of trust they represent, they were demanding Riebe's immediate resignation. The full investigative report has not been made public. Riebe was first elected to the state Senate in 2018 and represents District 15, covering Cottonwood Heights, Midvale, Sandy and Brighton, with a term running to January 1, 2029.
