Highly pathogenic avian influenza found at Pierce County commercial poultry facility, a first this year in Washington

The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department and the Washington State Department of Agriculture jointly reported on November 5 that highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has been detected at a commercial poultry facility in Pierce County, the first detection in commercial poultry in Washington this year.
The facility has been quarantined, and eggs from the affected birds have been destroyed. No human cases have been reported in the state, and health officials assess the public risk as low. Earlier this year, avian influenza was detected in Washington dairy herds.
