DC library hosts Mabel Ping-Hua Lee talk with 1882 Foundation's Ted Gong

The Takoma Park Neighborhood Library, part of the DC Public Library system, hosted a talk on the evening of November 5, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., by Ted Gong, executive director of the 1882 Foundation, on Chinese American suffrage pioneer Mabel Ping-Hua Lee. The talk, at 416 Cedar Street NW, was part of the library system's America 250 programming.
Lee was born in Guangzhou in 1896 and moved to New York as a child. At 16 she rode at the head of the 1912 New York suffrage parade, and she later became the first Chinese woman to earn a Ph.D. in economics from Columbia University. Barred by the Chinese Exclusion Act from citizenship, she was never able to vote. In July 2026 the 1882 Foundation and the DowntownDC BID unveiled a large mural of Lee in Washington's Chinatown.
