Monterey Bay Aquarium's Bilingual Ocean in Motion Opens November 7: Coral Reef Wave Machine and Expanded Penguin Habitat

Monterey Bay Aquarium's new bilingual exhibition Ocean in Motion / La Danza del Mar opened on November 7, 2026, in Monterey, Monterey County, California, at 886 Cannery Row. Presented in English and Spanish and created with children ages two to six in mind, while welcoming visitors of all ages, the exhibition aims to build empathy for ocean animals through movement and play.
The new gallery features a vibrant living coral reef with a custom-built wave machine, an expanded African penguin habitat, and multiple play areas that encourage children to move like the animals and connect with the ocean. The aquarium said the exhibition draws on research showing that empathy is a critical driver of long-term environmental engagement and care for the planet.
“The main theme of this exhibit is building empathy with ocean life in kids through movement, so we've selected endearing animals that move in fun ways,” said Monterey Bay Aquarium CEO Jenny Gray. The nonprofit aquarium said the exhibition was made possible by members and donors, with major leadership gifts from the Acton Family and Connie and Bob Lurie, and penguin exhibit sponsorship from the Susie and Gideon Yu Family.
