Omaha accepts $3.9M federal SAFER grant to hire 18 firefighters

The Omaha City Council in Nebraska has voted to accept a roughly $3.9 million federal SAFER firefighter grant from FEMA. The city will add about $2.4 million, for a total of some $6.3 million, to hire 18 new firefighters and support operations at the new Station 70.
The grant runs from March 2027 to March 2030. An earlier $6.8 million SAFER grant is supporting another 18 firefighters through March 2028. City officials said the two grants will help the Omaha Fire Department keep pace as the city grows.
