Illinois Speaker Welch says he will not seek another term after caucus revolt

Illinois House Speaker Emanuel 'Chris' Welch announced late on November 5 that he will not seek another term as speaker, after 26 House Democrats - 24 sitting members and two members-elect - signed a statement withholding support for his re-election.
'I serve at the pleasure of the caucus,' Welch said in his statement. The signers' grievances included his handling of harassment allegations involving Benton and the House's 60-vote rule for passing bills. Welch's departure opens a new leadership contest in the Illinois House.
