Wyoming secures 20 new Opportunity Zones, 16 of them rural, effective January 2027

Thursday, November 5, 2026 · States · GSM News

The Wyoming Business Council announced on November 5 that the U.S. Department of the Treasury has designated 20 census tracts in Wyoming as Opportunity Zones under the program's new permanent framework, 16 of them rural. The designations take effect January 1, 2027, and last 10 years, spanning nine counties: Albany, Campbell, Converse, Fremont, Johnson, Laramie, Natrona, Sweetwater and Uinta. Treasury approved the state's nominations on October 29.

Under the updated program, rural zones carry stronger incentives: a 30% basis step-up after five years - triple the 10% available elsewhere - plus a lower bar for rehabilitating existing buildings. Governor Mark Gordon convened an Opportunity Zone working group earlier this year, led by the Business Council and the Governor's Office with federal partners, local governments, economic development organizations and financial advisers.
