Minneapolis council hears public on interim chief Bill Peterson's nomination; about 50 speak, only three members publicly supportive

Thursday, November 5, 2026 · States · GSM News

The Minneapolis City Council's Public Health, Safety and Equity Committee held a public hearing on November 5 on Mayor Jacob Frey's nomination of interim Police Chief Bill Peterson to the permanent post. Nearly 50 residents spoke, with views both supportive and skeptical. The committee then forwarded the nomination to the full council without a recommendation; further questioning and a vote are set for the council meeting next Thursday, November 12.

Peterson has served with the Minneapolis Police Department since September 18, 1995, and became interim chief after Chief Brian O'Hara resigned in May. Frey formally nominated him on October 9.

So far only three council members have publicly backed Peterson. His appointment requires at least seven votes on the City Council. (Source: Minneapolis City Council)
