Former Kokomo Officer Sentenced to 40 Years for On-Duty Sexual Assault of 14-Year-Old and Obstruction

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Indiana announced that former Kokomo Police Department officer Sinmi Asomuyide, 33, of Kokomo in Howard County, Indiana, has been sentenced to 40 years in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release. In June 2026, Asomuyide was convicted following a five-day jury trial of Deprivation of Rights Under Color of Law, Witness Tampering, and Destruction of Records.
According to court documents and evidence presented at trial, Asomuyide, then 31, first encountered a 14-year-old girl on June 30, 2024, while serving as a Kokomo Police Department patrol officer. Earlier that day, the girl's father called 911 to report her as a runaway, and Asomuyide and another officer located her at the home of another underage girl.
After taking her into custody, Asomuyide transported her to the Kinsey Youth Center. As he entered the facility's sallyport garage, he turned off his body-worn camera in violation of department policy, took her cellphone and used it to call his personal TextNow number, and questioned her about her sexual history. During a pat-down he found a vape pen in her back pocket, and after entering the center he escorted her to a side room and told her he would contact her later to return it.
The girl was later picked up by a family friend at her father's direction. As she left, she sent Asomuyide a social media username and he asked for her TikTok username, and the two texted through the evening while she believed he intended to return the vape pen.
Later that evening, Asomuyide requested overtime at the station saying he would finish paperwork from 10 p.m. to midnight, but instead left to pick up the girl. He arrived at the family friend's apartment in uniform, demanded to speak to her privately, handcuffed her in the back of his squad car and drove to an empty warehouse parking lot, as shown by GPS data. He uncuffed her, moved her to the front seat and sexually assaulted her, then handcuffed her again and drove her back.
The girl reported the assault, prompting an Indiana State Police investigation. A forensic examination of the patrol vehicle found a dried semen stain matching Asomuyide's DNA on the center console. About a week later he falsely told detectives he had never given the girl his number and that she had contacted him on a work phone, though Kokomo officers are not issued work phones. A search of his phone showed searches within hours of the assault for how to delete a TextNow account.
The Justice Department said this was not his first instance of sexual misconduct with a minor: he had previously been forced to resign from the Portsmouth, Virginia, Police Department after an allegation of sexual intercourse with a 15-year-old while off duty, and misrepresented that history when applying to Kokomo. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon and U.S. Attorney Tom Wheeler condemned the abuse of the badge. The FBI Indianapolis Division and Indiana State Police investigated the case, and Chief District Judge James R. Sweeney II imposed the sentence.
