Ginkgo Bioworks, the synthetic-biology company based in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, on November 5 reported its results for the third quarter of 2026 and announced the first sale of an autonomous lab to a top-tier pharmaceutical company.

Third-quarter revenue was $28 million, down 6% from $29 million a year earlier but up from $20 million in the second quarter. The GAAP net loss from continuing operations was $41 million, compared with a $73 million loss a year earlier, while adjusted EBITDA was negative $22 million, improved from negative $53 million. Cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities stood at $285 million as of September 30, and third-quarter cash burn was $27 million.

On the business side, the company sold an autonomous lab to pharmaceutical company Novo for Novo's new research and development site in Waltham, Massachusetts. It also disclosed new government work, including a subcontract worth up to $17.5 million under the ARPA-H GIVE program to put its automation systems into RNA-medicine manufacturing for the first time, alongside National Science Foundation programmable cloud laboratory projects.

Its Cloud Lab signed 22 ADME customers in the quarter, 20 of them first-time customers. Takeda, Argenx, Lundbeck and AbbVie founded an antibody developability consortium, GSK, Novartis and Biogen also signed new work, and frontier AI labs including OpenAI are using the Cloud Lab to generate training data.

Co-founder and CEO Jason Kelly said the company now has two core offerings built on one autonomous lab platform, and that with the U.S. government treating autonomous labs as national infrastructure, Ginkgo is positioned to lead the transition from the bench to autonomous research.

The company reaffirmed its full-year 2026 total cash burn outlook of $125 million to $150 million and hosted a videoconference on November 5 to discuss the results. (Source: Ginkgo Bioworks)
