Democratic Socialists Win Record Six House Seats, Quadrupling Their Caucus to Eight

WASHINGTON — Candidates backed by the Democratic Socialists of America scored the movement's best night ever in national politics in the November 3, 2026 midterm elections: six candidates endorsed by the organization and its local chapters won seats in the House of Representatives, according to race calls by the Associated Press. The two sitting members — Representative Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York — were both re-elected, and with the six newcomers the organization's membership in the House will grow from two to eight.
The six newly elected members are Darializa Avila Chevalier and Claire Valdez of New York; Melat Kiros of Colorado; Angela Gonzalez-Torres of California; Donavan McKinney of Michigan; and Chris Rabb of Pennsylvania. Avila Chevalier defeated incumbent Representative Adriano Espaillat in New York's 13th Congressional District, while Kiros, a 29-year-old immigrant from Ethiopia, defeated 15-term incumbent Representative Diana DeGette in a July primary before winning Colorado's 1st Congressional District.
"This is a record for the DSA; these are numbers we have not seen in over a hundred years in socialist electoral activity," National Electoral Commission member Chanpreet Singh said on a livestream on election night. The Democratic Socialists of America is not a registered political party; the movement says it has more than 120,000 members, with chapters across all 50 states.
