Eight Killed, One Seriously Injured in Series of Shootings in Western Turkey; Suspect Arrested in Eskişehir Province

ANKARA — Eight people were killed and one seriously injured in a series of shootings in the western Turkish province of Afyonkarahisar on November 5, and the suspect was later arrested in the neighbouring province of Eskişehir.
Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency reported that the attacks struck rural areas of the province: three people were killed near Ayazini village and three near Kiyir village, while two women found injured in Yukaritandir died in hospital. Two teachers were among the dead, local media reported, and one more person was seriously injured. CCTV footage published by Turkish media showed a man in a black jacket, white trousers and glasses holding a long weapon beside a red minivan; police later found the vehicle stuck in mud on the outskirts of Eskişehir, the suspect having abandoned it and fled on foot.
The Eskişehir Governorship said the suspect was captured alive inside the province's borders in a joint operation by the Provincial Gendarmerie Command and Provincial Police Department. Investigators are examining whether the attacks are connected to an earlier incident in the centre of Afyonkarahisar in which a woman in a car was shot and seriously injured. No motive has been disclosed.
Afyonkarahisar lies between the capital, Ankara, and the coastal city of Izmir. The provincial governor's office said eight citizens had lost their lives and one had been seriously injured, and that state institutions were coordinating the response.
