Slovak PM Fico: Slovakia Will Sue if the EU Orders a Permanent Halt to Russian Oil Imports

Saturday, November 7, 2026 · World · GSM News

BRATISLAVA — Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said on November 7 that if the European Union decides to permanently halt Russian oil imports, Slovakia will probably challenge that decision in court, Russia's TASS news agency reported. Fico made the remarks on the Facebook page of his party, Direction – Social Democracy (Smer).

Fico said Slovakia had already filed a complaint with the Court of Justice of the European Union against the European Commission over ending Russian gas supplies, which are due to stop in 2027. Slovak state gas company SPP holds a contract with Gazprom that runs until 2034, and Slovakia challenged the Commission's gas decision at the EU court last month.

Under current arrangements, Russian oil supplies to Slovakia are also to be fully stopped by the end of 2027. Economy Minister Denisa Sakova has said the country is gradually reducing its dependence on Russian raw materials.

Fico also accused the European Commission of failing to act to bring down electricity prices across the bloc, saying the EU faces serious problems from an oil shortage and rising motor fuel prices.
