Kyiv — The death toll from the Russian bombing of an aid distribution point in the village of Komyshuvakha, in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region, rose to 43 on November 5. President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Thursday that 43 people had been confirmed killed and that one person previously reported missing had been found alive that day. Zaporizhzhia police said earlier on Thursday that the toll had reached 42, that up to 33 people remained buried beneath the rubble, and that rescue work and efforts to identify the bodies were continuing. It is one of the deadliest strikes on civilians this year.

The attack took place on Monday, November 2, as residents gathered at a former school building used as a humanitarian aid distribution point and underground shelter. Ukraine's national police said the strikes included a 3-ton FAB glide bomb carrying around 1.4 tons of explosives. Zelensky has said Russian forces dropped nine aerial bombs, first hitting people collecting aid and then the rescuers and police who arrived to help; two rescue workers and four police officers were among the dead.

Bodycam footage from one of the police officers killed, verified by Reuters, showed residents entering the shelter after a radio warning, moments before a second strike destroyed it. Ivan Fedorov, co-head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Defense Council, had said on Wednesday that 59 people were missing.

Russia's Defence Ministry said the attack targeted Ukrainian military units around Komyshuvakha and two other settlements, and that up to 25 Ukrainian servicemen were killed. Moscow and Kyiv both deny deliberately targeting civilians. GSM's previous update on November 4 put the toll at 40 dead with 59 missing.
