All 131 Missouri Census Tracts Win Federal Opportunity Zone Designation, Effective January 1, 2027 for 10 Years

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe and the Missouri Department of Economic Development (DED) announced in Jefferson City on November 5 that the U.S. Department of the Treasury has approved all 131 census tracts Missouri nominated for designation under the federal Opportunity Zones 2.0 program. The designations provide a tool to attract long-term private investment, support business growth, and expand economic opportunity in Missouri communities.

States were allowed to nominate up to 25 percent of their eligible census tracts. Missouri submitted its full allotment of 131 tracts, all of which received federal approval. DED worked with local partners who provided planning details and information demonstrating their communities' interest in the program and potential to successfully use the designation; their input helped inform Missouri's nominations and identify opportunities to align private investment with local priorities. "Missouri's Opportunity Zones will help attract investment that strengthens communities, creates jobs, and supports lasting economic growth," said Governor Kehoe. "By working with local partners, we're positioning our state to turn these designations into opportunities for Missourians and build on our commitment to making Missouri the best place to live, work, and do business." DED Director Michelle Hataway said local partners know their communities' needs and opportunities best and that their input was essential to the process.

Opportunity Zones encourage investment in economically distressed communities by offering federal tax incentives for qualifying investments through Qualified Opportunity Funds. The new designations take effect January 1, 2027, and remain in place for 10 years. Details are available on DED's Opportunity Zones webpage.
