Bloomberg Says Rubio Is Weighing Leaving the Trump Administration: State Department and White House Call the Report Fake News

Thursday, November 5, 2026 · Federal · GSM News

Washington — Bloomberg reported on November 5, citing people familiar with the matter, that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is weighing whether to leave the Trump administration, considering his next moves after Republicans' wipeout in this week's midterm elections. Rubio and his advisers are reviewing options for his future, the report said; he has spoken to White House officials about stepping down and has been asked to stay. He has not decided whether to quit his posts as secretary of state and national security adviser, and there is no timetable for a possible departure.

A departure before January would allow President Donald Trump to nominate a replacement before Democrats take control of the Senate, Bloomberg noted. The Independent separately placed Rubio on "resignation watch," suggesting he could be preparing a 2028 presidential campaign. Rubio told reporters in September that he had no plans at that time and was "100% focused" on his job.

The State Department and the White House both strongly denied the reports. Dylan Johnson, the assistant secretary of state for global public affairs, called the story "complete and total fake news based on the word of anonymous sources, befitting a tabloid," adding that the secretary "has not discussed leaving his role and he will continue to proudly serve in President Trump's administration long after this fake news is revealed as yet another baseless hoax." White House spokesperson Beni Rae Harmony used similar language, calling the reporting a fabricated hoax peddled by anonymous sources with no factual information.

As of November 5, Rubio had made no public statement on the matter, and no resignation has been announced. GSM presents both sides side by side: the departure deliberations rest on anonymous sources cited by Bloomberg and The Independent, while the official position of the State Department and the White House is a firm denial.
