The South Dakota Attorney General's Office announced the arrest of Michael Ottmo, 18, of Chamberlain in Brule County, on one count of aggravated assault in connection with a fatal stabbing, with further charges pending. Attorney General Marty Jackley and Brule County State's Attorney Theresa Maule released the news, noting that Ottmo is presumed innocent under the law.

Police were called to a Chamberlain residence at about 5:15 p.m. on Sunday and found Dustin Thomas, 44, seriously injured; he was taken to a hospital, where he died. Investigators have not released details about a motive, the relationship between the two men, or the weapon.

The state Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the case, assisted by the Chamberlain Police Department, the Brule County Sheriff's Office and state Game, Fish and Parks law enforcement. Prosecutors said additional charges are possible as autopsy and forensic work proceeds.

Ottmo made a first court appearance on Monday, with a status hearing Wednesday and a preliminary hearing tentatively set for 10 a.m. on November 13. Authorities asked anyone with information to contact the DCI and said further updates will follow the hearings.
