New York Opens $27 Million for Advanced Fuels Research and Awards About $10 Million to Five Projects

Friday, November 6, 2026 · States · GSM News

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) announced two advanced-fuels funding moves on November 5: a $27 million Advanced Fuels and Thermal Energy Research program now open for applications, and about $10 million awarded to five hydrogen and biofuel projects. Both draw on the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative and the Clean Energy Fund.

The $27 million program accepts proposals in three tracks - pilots, demonstrations and first-of-a-kind commercial projects - and requires at least 50 percent non-NYSERDA cost share. Applications are taken on a rolling basis until 3 p.m. Eastern on December 31, 2029, covering production, storage, transport and end use.

The roughly $10 million already awarded went to five projects: $850,000 to the American Institute of Chemical Engineers for a hydrogen safety center; $200,000 to the New York City Fire Department; nearly $2 million to Hydroplane Ltd for a hydrogen fuel-cell cargo watercraft; more than $4 million to Noblehurst Green Energy to convert biogas in Pavilion into sustainable aviation fuel; and more than $2.5 million to SWITCH Maritime to move hydrogen by tug and barge to the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

NYSERDA President Doreen Harris and Public Service Commission Chair Rory Christian joined the announcement. The state says advanced fuels are meant for freight, shipping and industrial heat where electrification is hardest, and proposals are scored on emissions cuts, cost-down potential and in-state manufacturing jobs.
