Japan Inaugurates Disaster Management Agency: Takaichi Unveils New Body to Coordinate National Response

Friday, November 6, 2026 · World · GSM News

Japan's new Disaster Management Agency was formally established on November 2, with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi unveiling its signboard at the Prime Minister's Office and delivering an address at the inauguration ceremony. Minister Hosono, State Minister Kaneko and Parliamentary Vice-Minister Onishi attended.

On the same day, Takaichi attended an attestation ceremony at the Imperial Palace for the agency's minister, state minister and parliamentary vice-minister, then delivered letters of appointment at her office. She also received a courtesy call from disaster prevention specialist ambassador Eko Noguchi.

The agency will coordinate disaster prevention, response and reconstruction across Japan's government. Sitting on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Japan faces frequent earthquakes, typhoons and floods, and the new body centralises functions previously scattered across ministries.
