Taiwan Defence Chief Koo: US Congressional Support Is Bipartisan Despite Delayed 14 Billion Dollar Arms Package

Taiwan Defence Minister Wellington Koo told reporters at parliament in Taipei on November 5 that the United States Congress has always been non-partisan on Taiwan and will continue to support Taipei in strengthening its defence capabilities after the US midterm elections.
A second arms package worth about 14 billion US dollars remains stalled. President Donald Trump approved an 11 billion dollar sale last December, the largest ever, but has held the second package in abeyance since his May meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, calling it a bargaining chip. Taipei officials acknowledge the package could slip into 2027.
Chen Fang-yu of Soochow University in Taipei said there is a high degree of consensus on Taiwan in both US parties. Trump is expected to meet Xi again at this month's APEC summit in Shenzhen and at the G20 in Florida in December. Taiwan's government says only the island's people can decide its future.
