Italy's Meloni Warns Europe Risks Irrelevance: Demands Single EU Voice in Ukraine Peace Talks

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wrote to European Council President Antonio Costa on November 5 warning that Europe risks becoming irrelevant in Ukraine peace negotiations unless it ends competing diplomatic initiatives and agrees on a single representative with a mandate to speak on its behalf.
In the letter, released by Palazzo Chigi, Meloni said the proliferation of formats was making Europe less credible. She said she was not seeking a seat for herself or Italy, but that Rome will not accept commitments negotiated without an EU mandate. She asked for the issue to be discussed at an informal European Council in Dublin next week, with a formal decision at the December summit in coordination with Britain, Norway and other partners.
Separately, Italy is finalising its first military aid package for Ukraine this year, its 13th since 2022, with Defence Minister Guido Crosetto to brief the COPASIR parliamentary committee on November 10. Meloni's coalition is increasingly split over further deliveries.
