Spain's Transport Minister Quits Over Train Crashes: Sanchez Puts Deputy Cuerpo in Interim Charge

Friday, November 6, 2026 · World · GSM News

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced on November 4 that his deputy, Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo, will provisionally run the Transport and Sustainable Mobility Ministry until the November 29 elections, following the resignation of Oscar Puente over two deadly high-speed train crashes this year that killed 115 people combined.

Speaking at Moncloa Palace, Sanchez praised Puente for taking political responsibility and helping restore confidence in the rail system, and said Cuerpo had shown enormous capacity for management and integrity. Puente announced his resignation on Tuesday night after a four-hour grilling by a caretaker parliament body, and said he will not stand in the November 29 election.

The departure leaves the ruling Socialists fighting the campaign without one of their most combative voices. Sanchez had earlier pledged to restore confidence in high-speed rail and to approve an aid decree for victims of the late-October Urda crash near Toledo.
