Indonesia's Prabowo Sacks Chief of Staff in Wiretapping Scandal: Fourth Senior Officer Named a Suspect

Friday, November 6, 2026 · World · GSM News

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto sacked his chief of staff Listyo Sigit Prabowo on November 4, a day after his arrest with two top police officers on suspicion of wiretapping the president, cabinet ministers, journalists, politicians and business people since 2025. Presidential spokesperson Prasetyo Hadi said what was done may already fall into a category that can be considered an act tending toward treason.

Listyo, no relative of the president, had been national police chief for five years before becoming chief of staff last month. The military said thousands of troops were being mobilised in Jakarta to boost security. Senior legal affairs minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra said the motive for the wiretapping has yet to be determined.

Police named a fourth senior officer as a suspect late on November 6, the former head of the Criminal Investigation Agency's information and technology unit. Investigators have questioned 13 police officers and five criminal and IT experts. The scandal comes as Prabowo faces a slumping approval rating and a battle to restore investor confidence.
