Poland's Constitutional Tribunal Crisis Deepens: Assembly Passes 2027 Budget as Tusk Accuses Russia of Meddling

Friday, November 6, 2026 · World · GSM News

Poland's Constitutional Tribunal, meeting in general assembly on November 3, secured a budget for 2027, but the fight over its leadership deepened. Judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska had announced on October 30 the suspension of tribunal president Bogdan Swieczkowski and taken charge herself, triggering open confrontation between President Karol Nawrocki and Prime Minister Donald Tusk's government.

Nawrocki has refused to accept the oath from several judges elected by parliament and recognises only judges appointed under the former Law and Justice government. Only eight of the tribunal's 15 judges attended Tuesday's assembly, and nationalist parties contest its legitimacy.

Tusk told a government sitting on November 3 that Russia and pro-Russian politicians, including Security Council deputy chairman Dmitry Medvedev, who called the government's moves a coup, were seeking to fuel instability in Poland over the dispute. Tusk said restoring the rule of law is the government's duty and the tribunal should work independently, including of him. The dispute dates to judicial appointments under Law and Justice rule from 2015 to 2023, with elections due in 2027.
