Canada Tables Budget 2026: C$400 Billion Capital Push and C$22 Billion in Affordability Measures

Friday, November 6, 2026 · World · GSM News

Canada's Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne released Budget 2026, titled Masters of our destiny, in Ottawa on November 5. The budget proposes C$400 billion in capital investments over six years and lowers direct program spending growth from 8 percent to 2 percent.

On affordability, it sets out C$22 billion in new measures, including a one-time boost to the groceries benefit, up to C$50,000 in help for first-time buyers of new homes, energy retrofits for one million homes, and permanently free national museum admission for people under 25. The government says day-to-day operating spending will balance with revenues by 2027-28, a year ahead of schedule.

It is the second budget of Prime Minister Mark Carney's government, built on investment, productivity and affordability, with a new Productivity Mega Deduction letting businesses immediately deduct most new investment. The plan sets permanent resident admissions at 380,000 a year through 2028.
