Australia Pushes a Classroom Digital Detox: Ministers Weigh National Screen Limits and Curbs on School AI

Australia's federal government is pushing for a digital detox in schools. A new report outlines growing concerns about digital technologies in classrooms, including artificial intelligence harming children's critical thinking, concentration and problem-solving skills, and the government plans to reduce screen time and limit AI use at school to improve learning.
Education Minister Jason Clare told ABC Radio National that he is not arguing to burn the iPads, but that there is a good argument for more pen and paper and less tech. State and federal education ministers have agreed to consider national limits on screen use, building on limits proposed in New South Wales and Victoria and soon to be piloted in Western Australia.
The report also proposes returning some Year 5 NAPLAN tests to written assessment, a new task force to report to ministers three times next year, and restrictions on generative AI in elementary schools and for high school assessments. A complete technology ban is not being suggested.
