On This Day, November 6: Lincoln Elected President and the First College Football Game

1860: Abraham Lincoln is elected the 16th president of the United States, the first Republican to win the presidency. He took only about 40 percent of the popular vote but defeated three rivals, including candidates of a divided Democratic Party; the Civil War began the following year.
1861: Jefferson Davis is elected president of the Confederate States of America.
1869: Rutgers defeats the College of New Jersey (later Princeton), 6-4, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, in the first intercollegiate American football game. Each side fielded 25 players kicking a round ball for goals, a game far removed from today's football; Princeton won the return match 8-0 a week later.
1917: Canadian troops capture the Belgian village of Passchendaele, bringing one of the First World War's costliest battles toward its end.
1947: Meet the Press debuts on NBC television; it goes on to become the longest-running program in American television history.
1999: Australian voters reject a proposal to become a republic in a national referendum, keeping the constitutional monarchy.
