Cook County Tax Sale Lists 9,481 Properties, Fewest Since 1994; Sale Opens December 15

CHICAGO, Ill. — Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas announced on November 6 that 9,481 Cook County properties have been listed for this year's annual tax sale on December 15, the fewest since at least 1994.

Of the total, 5,092 properties are in Chicago and 4,389 are in the suburbs, both among the lowest levels on record. Pappas said reforms that gave property owners more time to pay delinquent taxes were the main reason for the decline. Notably, 2,737 of the properties owe less than $1,000 in back taxes.

The sale covers property taxes for the 2023 tax year that came due in 2024. State law requires the sale to be held within 13 months after the second-installment due date. Originally scheduled for September 2025, the sale was postponed to December 15 this year to give owners more time, and will run for four days.

The Treasurer's Office published the list of tax-delinquent properties in local newspapers and on its website on November 4 and 5. Pappas reminded delinquent owners that paying before the sale can still keep a property out of the auction, and that the Treasurer's Office website offers tax lookup and payment channels.
