Houston Council Approves Bid for Federal Counter-Drone Grants From $250 Million National Program

Friday, November 6, 2026 · Society · GSM News

HOUSTON, Texas — The Houston City Council voted on November 4 to approve the city's application for federal counter-drone funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The money comes from FEMA's second-round, $250 million national program — a nationwide total, not an award to Houston alone — according to details reported on November 6.

The application, Ordinance 2026-0982, was item 36 on the council's 47-item consent agenda and passed in the bloc vote with no member tagging or amending it. The funding comes from a federal counter-drone grant program created to help local law enforcement detect, identify, track and monitor drones. Houston's application says the equipment would serve all SEAR-rated large events in the Houston area, with a performance period from December 2026 to December 2029.

City officials said rules governing use of the equipment are still being drafted, and FEMA is expected to announce awards on December 10. The vote covered only the grant application itself; no equipment has been purchased.
