Iowa Speaker Pat Grassley Rules Out Special Session to Limit Governor-Elect Rob Sand's Powers

DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowa House Speaker Pat Grassley said on November 6 that Republicans will not call a special session of the legislature to weaken the powers of Democratic Governor-elect Rob Sand before Sand takes office next January.
Grassley made the remarks to reporters after a House Republican caucus meeting that also reelected him as speaker. Sand defeated Republican Zach Lahn in the November 3 midterm elections, becoming the first Democrat to win an Iowa governor's race since 2006; Republicans have controlled both the legislature and the governor's office since 2016.
Appearing on Iowa PBS's Iowa Press on November 6, Sand said he would urge Republicans not to hold a special session to limit his powers. Grassley said restricting the governor-elect's authority was not a focus of the caucus meeting. Sand takes office next January, succeeding outgoing Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds.
