Oregon Gov. Kotek to Seek $10 Million in Emergency Funds for Bend School Shooting Recovery

Friday, November 6, 2026 · States · GSM News

PORTLAND, Ore. — Gov. Tina Kotek told reporters in Portland on November 6 that she will ask the Oregon Legislature's Emergency Board for $10 million in emergency funding to support recovery from the October 15 shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Deschutes County. The money would help the Bend-La Pine School District and the High Desert Education Service District respond to needs arising from the shooting.

The Emergency Board will meet in the first week of December to consider the request, ahead of the Legislature's six-month session beginning in January. Kotek had already declared an emergency on October 26 to mobilize state agencies to assist the district, and the state required all districts to send gun-safety guidance to parents by November 6.

The shooting occurred during campaign season, about two weeks before the November 3 election and two days after Kotek debated her Republican opponent, state Sen. Christine Drazan, in the area. Kotek said the state will continue to stand with the Bend community as affected families and schools recover.
