NC State Hosts East Tennessee State as Gainey Era Looks for 2-0 Start
RALEIGH, N.C. — The NC State men's basketball team hosts East Tennessee State on the night of November 6, continuing the opening stretch of new head coach Justin Gainey's tenure.
Gainey played at NC State from 1996 to 2000 and this season succeeded Will Wade, who left in March to return to LSU. In Gainey's debut on November 2, NC State beat Campbell 83-64. Forward Ven-Allen Lubin went 8-for-8 from the field for 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the win.
East Tennessee State lost its opener 75-65 to Arizona State, with B.J. Ward scoring 25 points with 3 assists, 4 rebounds and 4 steals. The Buccaneers went 23-11 last season and won the Southern Conference regular-season title before losing the conference tournament final to Furman; their last win over a power-conference opponent came against Georgia in December 2021. The matchup will test whether Gainey's team can carry its opening form forward.
