Minnesota Mayor's Race Tied 1,401 to 1,401; Winner to Be Decided by Drawing

Friday, November 6, 2026 · States · GSM News

SPRING LAKE PARK, Minn. — The mayoral election in Spring Lake Park ended in a tie, with incumbent Mayor Robert Nelson and challenger Halyn Roth each receiving 1,401 votes, alongside 12 write-in ballots. The city announced the result on November 5.

Under Minnesota law, a tied election must be decided by lot. The city council is scheduled to canvass the votes publicly at 5:30 p.m. on November 9 in the council chambers at City Hall; if the result stands, a candidate's name will be drawn on the spot to decide the winner. The proceedings are open to the public.

The losing candidate may, within seven days of the drawing, request a recount paid for with public funds. Roth said that if Nelson wins the drawing, he plans to request a recount.

Spring Lake Park is a suburb of Minneapolis. City Administrator Daniel Buchholtz called such an exact tie extremely rare.
