Two Candidates Vie to Be Nashville's Interim Sheriff; Council Votes November 17

Friday, November 6, 2026 · States · GSM News

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Nashville's Metro Council will vote on November 17 to choose Davidson County's first new sheriff in nearly 25 years. Sheriff Daron Hall announced last month that he was leaving for the private sector, ending a 24-year tenure; his last day was October 19. Hall had won a seventh term unopposed in August, and his departure left the council to select an interim successor quickly.

After a month-long nomination period, two candidates are seeking the interim post: Chief Deputy Ruby Joyner and former lieutenant Jared Irvine. Both will be interviewed on November 10 by the council's Rules, Confirmations and Public Elections Committee before the full council votes at its November 17 meeting, where the appointment is the first item on the agenda. Whoever is appointed must run for election next year to serve out the remainder of Hall's term. The appointee will lead the sheriff's office until voters elect a permanent successor.
